Theater Audition Example
Intimidation

While a junior in high school, I auditioned for Guys and Dolls at Sundance. The second I walked into the room I felt intimidated. I was way out of my league. I was one of the youngest and least experienced people there. I was very intimidated by the talent around me, but I stayed.

While waiting in a huge line for the singing portion of the audition, everyone was talking. When those around me (college students and older actors) found out I was still in high school, I was cut out of their conversation. They obviously didn't think I had any business being there. Maybe I didn't, but I stuck it out.

When my turn came, I entered the room and sang my 32 bars. Only problem was at the end of my 32 bars the piano kept playing. I panicked for a second. I didn't know if I should keep going or grab my music and run. I kept singing. I ended up singing the whole thing and the director explained she wanted to hear me sing the high part she knew was at the end of the song.

The people who had been in line around me could hear me through the door. As I left they stopped me and complimented me on my singing. I had impressed the people who didn't think I should even be there. I have to say that felt pretty good. I ended up being called back, but didn't get a part. I was, in the end, too young and inexperienced.

The point is, I was very intimidated throughout the entire audition, but I didn't let that intimidation stop me. Even though I didn't get a part, this was one of my favorite auditions because it taught me to never be intimidated by those around me. As an actor, you have to have faith in yourself and always push forward. If I had let intimidation scare me away, I wouldn't have had this wonderful experience.
