Roll With the Punches
Directors can make some pretty weird requests during auditions.
During an audition for a theater scholarship at a local university I had to prepare, among other things, a Humorous Interpretation (H.I.), which is usually seen more in debate competitions. An H.I. is several minutes long and the actor has to do several different characters. H.I.s are really quite fun.
So, I performed my H.I. I thought I did pretty well. Hey, let's face it, I nailed it :). Then the person I was auditioning for asked me to do the H.I. again, but this time I had to pantomime playing tennis while doing it.
Playing tennis? Okay.
I guess this was his way of seeing if I could take direction. I jumped right into it without hesitation. And I guess I did okay because I did get the scholarship.
Point is, you have to be prepared for anything in an audition. Don't let things throw you. Role with the punches.
